Meet Dr. Richard Weitzman
Dr. Richard Weitzman was raised on a farm in Pennsylvania. As a small boy he discovered his passion for animals and knew very early in life that he would someday become a veterinarian. It didn’t take long for him to realize his dreams.
He received his Bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College and quickly moved on to earn a degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine. Following the completion of veterinary school, he served in the military at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
Dr. Weitzman first set up practice out of his home in 1968 and eleven years later moved it just a few blocks away to its present location. During the course of his lifelong service to local area pets and their families, he founded MEAC (Rockville’s Metropolitan Emergency Animal Clinic) in 1975. He has also served as Director and Program Chairman of the DC Academy of Veterinary Medicine, and is an Honor Roll member of the AVMA and the Maryland State VMA.
An active member of the community, he has served as President of the Maryland State Golf Association and as a Board Member and Greens Chairman for Norbeck Country Club. Dr. Weitzman and his wife, Shelly, have resided in Montgomery County for the past 49 years (and have been married for more than 50!). Together, they enjoy golfing, traveling, reading and their book clubs, cheering on the Maryland Terrapins, dining out and, most importantly, spending time with their two daughters and their husbands, four grandchildren, and two Labradoodles.
